Queens Village is a neighborhood of houses: brick and stucco Tudors, Cape Cods and colonials, plus rows of attached brick homes, most of them built from the 1920s through the 1950s. The main corridors are Hempstead Avenue, Jamaica Avenue, Springfield Boulevard and Braddock Avenue, with the LIRR stopping at Queens Village station and the Cross Island Parkway along the eastern side. Most homes have a full basement holding the boiler, the water heater, the gas meter and the house trap.

Housing of that age tends to arrive at the same set of decisions around the same time. Original galvanized supply piping narrows inside and drops pressure on the second floor. Cast iron drain stacks crack at the hubs. Boilers installed decades ago are now running past their service life. We work through these one at a time or plan them together, always with a written estimate first, so the house gets what it needs without surprises.

Common plumbing issues in Queens Village
Galvanized pipe and weak upstairs pressure
Many Queens Village homes still have galvanized steel supply lines from the original build. Over the years the inside of the pipe fills with rust and scale, so a second floor shower slows to a trickle when someone runs the kitchen sink. Cleaning does not fix it. Replacing the main runs and risers with copper or PEX restores full flow, and we can phase the work floor by floor.
Aging boilers in the basement
A lot of the boilers we see here are original replacements from decades ago, still running but burning more gas than they should and leaking at the sections or valves. Before the first cold snap, a boiler inspection tells you whether a repair will carry you through the winter or whether it is time to price a new unit. We give you both numbers in writing.
Cracked cast iron under the slab and in the stack
Cast iron drain pipe from the 1930s and 1940s rusts from the inside, and the bottom of horizontal runs wears thin first. Signs include a sewer smell in the basement, damp spots near the floor drain, or water stains on a ceiling under a bathroom. We camera the line to find the bad section and replace only what has failed when that is the sensible fix.

Plumbing in Queens Village: FAQ
How do I know if my Queens Village house still has galvanized pipe?
Look at the pipe coming off the water meter in the basement. Galvanized steel is dull gray with threaded fittings, and a magnet will stick to it. Copper is reddish brown and does not attract a magnet. If you see gray threaded pipe and have low pressure upstairs, it is probably time to replace it.
Should I repair or replace my old boiler?
It depends on the condition of the sections, the burner and the controls, and on how much you are spending on gas and repair calls each winter. We inspect the boiler, give you a written repair price and a written replacement price, and explain the tradeoffs. Replacement estimates are free, and financing is available.
Do you install gas lines for a new stove or dryer?
Yes. We run new gas piping from your existing line to the appliance, install a shutoff valve, and test the line for leaks before the appliance is connected. Gas work in NYC must be done by a licensed plumber, and we handle it start to finish. See gas line services.
