Nationwide Plumbers is a NYC-licensed master plumbing company working across the Upper East Side from 59th Street to 96th Street, the pre-war co-ops of Fifth Avenue, Park Avenue and Madison Avenue, the Lenox Hill blocks around Lexington and Third, the Carnegie Hill townhouses between 86th and 96th, the Yorkville walk-ups and tenements along First, Second and York Avenues, the East End Avenue buildings facing Carl Schurz Park, Henderson Place, and the Treadwell Farm rows on East 61st and 62nd Streets. We hold NYC Master Plumber License #2023 and have worked in New York City since 1984.

The Upper East Side is two building stocks. West of Lexington: doorman co-ops built 1905–1931, with cast iron risers and rooftop water tanks. East of Third: five- and six-story walk-ups and old-law tenements whose plumbing followed wherever the last renovation put it. The problems, the approvals and the price differ on each side.

Common plumbing issues on the Upper East Side
Original cast iron and galvanized risers. Most pre-war UES co-ops still run some original riser pipe. Galvanized supply scales up and drops upper-floor pressure; cast iron stacks crack at joints and leak into the line below. A riser serves every stacked unit, so the job is scheduled with the building and water is shut down line by line.
Board approval before a wrench turns. Anything beyond a like-for-like fixture swap goes through the managing agent: an alteration agreement, an insurance certificate naming the corporation and agent, often an engineer review. Many Fifth and Park Avenue co-ops enforce a summer work rule, limiting wall-opening work to roughly Memorial Day through Labor Day, so a summer bathroom needs paperwork started in winter. See co-op board approval for plumbing work in Manhattan.
Rooftop tanks and upper-floor pressure. Taller buildings feed from a rooftop gravity tank filled by cellar house pumps. Weak pressure on the top floors is usually a tank-height or pump problem, not a faucet problem. The tank must be inspected every year under the NYC Health Code.
Walk-up plumbing added in layers. Yorkville tenement bathrooms were often added decades later, fed by branch lines through closets and hung ceilings. Leaks surface two floors from their source.
Local Law 152 is live here. The Upper East Side is Manhattan Community District 8, which is in the current gas-piping inspection cycle with a December 31, 2026 filing deadline. Buildings with gas piping, other than one- and two-family houses, need a licensed master plumber to inspect and file. Large co-ops with multiple gas risers get a written quote for inspection and filing up front, with corrections quoted separately.

Plumbing in Upper East Side: FAQ
Do you work in Upper East Side co-ops that require board approval?
Yes. We supply the license, insurance certificate and scope documents the managing agent requires, and file DOB permits under License #2023.
Is my Upper East Side building subject to the December 31, 2026 Local Law 152 deadline?
If it is in Manhattan Community District 8 (Upper East Side, Lenox Hill, Yorkville, Carnegie Hill), has gas piping and more than two units, yes. Confirm the district on DOB BIS.
Why is the water pressure low only on the top floors of my building?
Top floors sit closest to the rooftop tank and get the least gravity head. It usually points to tank height, house pumps or a scaled riser, not your fixtures.
Can you replace a riser without shutting off water to the whole building?
Usually. Only the apartments on that line lose water, typically for part of a working day per section.
Do you serve north of 96th Street?
Our Manhattan service area ends at 96th Street, so East Harlem is outside it.
