Nationwide Plumbers is a NYC-licensed master plumbing company headquartered at 6923 8th Avenue in Dyker Heights (11228), right next door to Bay Ridge. We work in Bay Ridge homes and buildings every week, from the pre-war limestone row houses along 78th and 79th Streets, to the mid-rise co-ops on Shore Road and Ridge Boulevard, to the single-family Victorians on Colonial Road, to the brick attached homes east of 4th Avenue. If you live anywhere between Owl's Head Park and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, we're a few blocks away and on call 24/7.

Bay Ridge's housing stock is older than most of Brooklyn, a lot of the building inventory dates to the 1910s–1940s, which means the plumbing problems here are specific and recurring. We handle them all day.

Common plumbing issues in Bay Ridge
Cast-iron sewer line failures. Most Bay Ridge homes built before WWII have cast-iron sewer pipes running from the house to the city main. After 70–90 years, these lines crack, sag, or fully collapse, especially under driveways and front stoops. We've replaced dozens along the 70s and 80s blocks between 3rd and 5th Avenues. NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) requires a licensed master plumber for any sewer line work tying into the public main; we pull the permit and handle the curb-to-house tie-in.
Oil-to-gas boiler conversions. A meaningful share of Bay Ridge single-family and two-family homes still run on oil heat. With National Grid gas service available on most blocks east of Shore Road, conversions are common, and they're a multi-trade job (plumbing, gas, chimney lining, oil tank decommissioning). NYC Local Law 97 carbon caps on larger buildings have accelerated this for the bigger Shore Road co-ops, but most of our Bay Ridge conversion work is one- and two-family homes converting voluntarily for the cost savings.
Low water pressure on upper floors of Shore Road co-ops. The 5-, 6-, and 8-story co-ops along Shore Road and Ridge Boulevard often have original galvanized supply risers that have narrowed from 40+ years of mineral buildup. Top-floor pressure complaints are usually a riser problem, not a fixture problem. We diagnose it with a pressure gauge at the fixture and at the basement main, and we coordinate with co-op boards and managing agents on repipe work.
Frozen pipes on exterior walls, especially homes facing the water. Houses on Shore Road, Colonial Road, and the avenues west of 3rd Avenue catch hard wind off the harbor. Pipes routed through exterior walls or unheated crawlspaces freeze in cold snaps. We repair the burst, then re-route or insulate so it doesn't happen again.
Sewer ejector pump failures in finished basements. Many Bay Ridge homes have finished cellars with a basement bathroom or laundry below the city sewer level. These rely on an ejector pump that lifts waste up to the main line. The pumps are mechanical and fail, usually right when you don't want them to. We replace pumps, replace switches, and install backup alarms.
Backflow preventer compliance for multi-family. NYC DEP requires annual testing of reduced-pressure zone (RPZ) backflow preventers in many multi-family and commercial buildings. We're certified to test, repair, and file the report.

Plumbing in Bay Ridge: FAQ
Do you work on Shore Road co-ops?
Yes. We work regularly with Shore Road and Ridge Boulevard co-op boards and managing agents on repipe work, water heater replacement, and emergency repairs. We can provide insurance certificates and license documentation in advance for board approval.
My Bay Ridge home still has oil heat. Can you convert me to gas?
Yes. We handle the full conversion, new gas boiler, gas piping from the meter, chimney lining if required, and coordination with National Grid for the service upgrade. Oil tank decommissioning is handled separately by a licensed tank contractor we work with regularly. Typical residential conversion in Bay Ridge runs 2–4 weeks from contract to commissioning, depending on permit timing.
How quickly can you get to a Bay Ridge emergency?
For most Bay Ridge addresses, 30–60 minutes overnight or on weekends. Daytime traffic on the Belt Parkway or 86th Street can stretch that. Call 718-748-2727.
Do I need a permit to replace my sewer line in Bay Ridge?
Yes. Any sewer work that connects to the NYC public sewer requires a permit from NYC DEP and must be performed by a licensed master plumber. We pull the permit and handle the curb cut and tie-in. House traps, internal sewer rerouting, and cleanout installations may also require DOB plumbing permits depending on scope.
Will my Bay Ridge brownstone need a backflow preventer?
Single-family and two-family residential homes typically do not. Multi-family buildings, commercial properties, and any property with an irrigation system or boiler with chemical treatment generally do. We can survey and tell you in one visit.
