Nationwide Plumbers is a NYC-licensed master plumbing company working across the Upper West Side from 59th Street to 96th Street, the pre-war co-ops of Central Park West, West End Avenue and Riverside Drive, the brownstone and limestone row houses on the side streets between Columbus and Amsterdam, the Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue walk-ups above storefronts, and the Lincoln Square and Riverside Boulevard towers between 59th and 72nd. We hold NYC Master Plumber License #2023 and have worked in New York City since 1984.

The Upper West Side mixes three building types on almost every block. A West 78th Street row house converted to four apartments in the 1950s, a 1920s West End Avenue co-op with steam heat and cast iron risers, and a 2000s Riverside Boulevard condo with booster pumps and pressure-reducing valves each fail differently. We diagnose the building first, then the fixture.

Services we offer on the Upper West Side

Common plumbing issues on the Upper West Side

Brownstones cut into apartments. Many side-street row houses between Central Park West and Riverside Drive were divided into rooming units and later apartments. Each conversion added bathrooms and kitchens on branch lines through closets and hung ceilings, often tied into the original cast iron stack with mixed materials. Leaks show up a floor or two from their source, and one drain backup can affect every unit on the stack. See cast iron stack repair, the same pipe and the same failure pattern as Brooklyn brownstones.

House traps and old building sewers. Row houses still drain through a cellar house trap and a lateral running under the sidewalk to the street sewer. Roots from street trees, collapsed clay sections and a stuck house trap are the usual causes of a cellar backup. A camera inspection tells you which.

Pre-war co-op risers and steam. The large co-ops on Central Park West, West End Avenue and Riverside Drive, including courtyard buildings like the Apthorp and the Belnord, run long cast iron and galvanized risers and one-pipe or two-pipe steam heat. Scaled galvanized supply drops upper-floor pressure; steam risers leak at the floor sleeve. Riser work is done line by line with the building, under board approval. See co-op board approval for plumbing work in Manhattan.

New construction has its own failures. The Lincoln Square and Riverside South towers rely on booster pumps, pressure zones and pressure-reducing valves. A failed PRV sends full pressure into an apartment and blows out supply lines and appliance hoses. These buildings call for a plumber who reads the pressure-zone layout, not just the fixture.

Gas shutoffs and Local Law 152. After a leak report, the utility locks the meter and gas stays off until a licensed master plumber repairs, pressure-tests and gets a DOB sign-off. The Upper West Side is Manhattan Community District 7, whose Local Law 152 gas-piping inspection was due December 31, 2025. Buildings that didn't file are out of compliance and can still inspect and file late; the next cycle for CD7 is 2029. Every co-op gets a written quote for the inspection and filing up front, with repairs quoted separately.

Plumbing in Upper West Side: FAQ

Do you work in Upper West Side co-ops that require board approval?

Yes. We provide the license, insurance certificate and scope documents the managing agent asks for, and file DOB permits under License #2023.

Did my Upper West Side building miss its Local Law 152 deadline?

If it is in Manhattan Community District 7, has gas piping and more than two units, its inspection was due by December 31, 2025. If no certification is on file with DOB, schedule the inspection now and file late.

Why does my brownstone cellar back up when it rains?

Usually a partly blocked house trap or building sewer that can't carry the extra flow. A camera inspection shows whether it needs cleaning or a sewer repair.

My gas was shut off after a leak. How long until it's back?

Small repairs often take one to three weeks, because the work needs a DOB permit, a pressure test and utility relight, not just the repair itself.

Do you serve north of 96th Street?

Our Manhattan service area ends at 96th Street, so Manhattan Valley and Morningside Heights are outside it.
