Coney Island is best known for the boardwalk, Luna Park, the Cyclone and the Wonder Wheel, but most people here live in the apartment towers and older houses west of the amusement area, along Surf Avenue, Mermaid Avenue and Neptune Avenue. The D, F, N and Q trains all end at Stillwell Avenue. The neighborhood sits on a narrow strip between the Atlantic and Coney Island Creek, with Sea Gate at the far western tip.

That location defines the plumbing work. Hurricane Sandy flooded the neighborhood, and basements, boiler rooms and pump rooms in many buildings had to be rebuilt. High-rise buildings depend on domestic water pumps to get water to the upper floors. The amusement district and the food businesses along Surf Avenue and the boardwalk run commercial kitchens whose grease lines need regular cleaning.

Common plumbing issues in Coney Island
Water pressure in tall buildings
City water pressure only reaches the lower floors of a high-rise, so towers here rely on pumps to push water up through the risers. When a pump, pressure switch or check valve fails, upper floors lose water or get pressure surges. We service domestic water pumps, controls and riser valves, and work with building staff to keep shutdowns short.
Boiler and pump rooms below grade
Many buildings keep their boilers, pumps and electrical gear in basements not far above the water table. The ejector and sump pumps down there need to work every time. We test floats and alarms, replace worn pumps and check valves, and look at the boiler room as a whole so one failure does not take out heat and hot water together.
Annual backflow testing
Buildings with a backflow preventer on the water service, which includes most large residential and commercial properties, must have it tested every year by a certified tester, with the results filed with the city. A failed test usually means worn internal parts. We test, repair and replace backflow devices and handle the filing.
Older houses on the western blocks
Mixed in with the towers are older one and two family houses on the blocks toward Sea Gate. Many have low basements, original house sewers and equipment that was replaced after the 2012 flood. Their usual problems are backups during storms and sewer laterals clogged with sand and debris, which a camera inspection and jetting can sort out.

Plumbing in Coney Island: FAQ
Upper floors in our building have low water pressure. What should we check?
Start with the pump system: the pumps themselves, pressure switches, check valves and any tank controls. Partly closed riser valves and failing pressure reducing valves can also cause it. We inspect the system, find the cause and give a written estimate before repairs begin.
Does my business on Surf Avenue need backflow testing?
If the property has a backflow preventer on its water service, the city requires a yearly test by a certified tester. Restaurants and many commercial buildings have one. We test, repair if needed and file the results. See backflow testing.
Do you work in Sea Gate too?
Yes. Sea Gate, at the western end of the Coney Island peninsula, is within our NYC service area, and we dispatch 24/7. Many homes there are older houses close to the water, with the same flooding and sewer concerns as the rest of the neighborhood.
